How to save thousands of dollars in Tuition - How to Apply for Financial Aid

Ok folks, so your kid was not smart enough or athletic enough to garner (запасать) a coveted (желанную) scholarship (образованность, стипендию). No big deal (ничего страшного), we can get past that.
There are many programs out there that offer limited scholarships (стипендию), grants, and loans but we are not going to discuss any one of them!
We are going to talk about a misunderstood and not very well known program of CLEP testing. Что такое КЛЕП?

Using CLEP test's I was able to knock out two Associates degrees and a good bit of my Bachelors without setting foot in a classroom. Does it work for all people? No! You need to be motivated enough to do a little studying on your own. Most of these tests are not that difficult if you are fresh out of high school. If it has been a few years since your last class, then we can work with that later.

CLEP stands for College Level Examination Program. The purpose of these exams is to gain college credit on your academic record and show that you have completed work for these particular courses. Each college has their own way or method of accepting the scoring so one college may find a certain score acceptable while another may have higher standards and expect an even higher score for the same test.

There are five General Examinations that if completed satisfactorily you can gain up to 6 semester hours of credit each. The General Examinations cover five areas: College Mathematics, English Composition (with or without essay), Natural Sciences, Social Sciences/ History, and Humanities. There are a great number of specialty CLEPs that can be taken that offer 3 semester hours each.

The specialty CLEPs are actually called Subject Examinations and cover specific college courses. There are 34 different tests which cover the following areas:

Composition and Literature
Foreign Languages
History and Social Sciences
Science and Mathematics
Business

The CLEP tests cover material you would normally learn in an introductory college course. If you attended a high school that took it's curriculum as seriously as mine did then you will find these tests to be a breeze. The Exams are given by the college board and scored by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Remember that only accredited colleges may grant you credit for your degree. There are over 2,800 universities and colleges that will allow credit from the successful completion of a CLEP test.

The basic cost of a CLEP test runs $44.00. The institutions that administer these tests do tack on testing fees which run from miniscule to exorbitant. In either case passing these tests will save you an enormous amount of time and money! Think of the cost of a typical course, add books, lab fees, and whatever else they think of. Now subtract the cost of the CLEP and the testing fee and you will see an instant savings of hundreds of dollars.

Now about the tests themselves. The General Exams are basically 90 minute tests that are broken down into two 45 minute subtests. The number of questions varies from 55 to 150. Each exam has multiple choice type questions. For each one you get right you earn 1 point. For each one you get wrong you lose a fraction of a point. I would suggest avoiding random guessing for the ones you do not know. If you can eliminate at least one of the answers as being wrong then try to make an educated guess. In the end you will come out ahead statistically.

A good education office should have a catalog of the tests and will have copies of the specific tests information packages available to you. These information packets will contain a breakdown by percentage of the subject areas covered, sample questions, and examples of textbooks that should be reviewed in preparation for the test. You will find that in the General Tests a library will have General Examination study packages with videos that can help you prepare. For those of you who have been out of school for awhile I highly suggest you study these pre-made General Examination packages. If you are one of the "sharper tools in the shed" then you really will not need to review much at all.

The Subject Examinations are a bit more difficult and I would highly recommend preparation by all. You may not find the actual references to study that were mentioned in the test information packet but you can find books in the same area that will be just as helpful. Try to stick with the newer titles.

What happens if I blow a test? Don't sweat it, I have failed three myself. Mostly due to a lack of studying. You can retake the test 6 months later. Most of the questions will be relatively the same. Once I pushed myself a little harder, I always passed the failed tests on the second attempt. If you fail a test you will not get your money back.

Like I mentioned before I did blow a couple of tests. One of them was Personal Human Resource Management. do not take this one lightly. You must study hard. The other was the Speech CLEP. I got the Q&A part right but when you have to give your speech into a tape recorder I blew it. In order to prepare for this one have a friend give you a current debate topic. You then give yourself ten minutes to make an outline of what you want to say. Now from your outline try to give a coherent speech that will last from 3 to 5 minutes. If you practice you will do fine.

I hope this gives you a little insight into the world of CLEP testing and the savings in time and money that it can provide. If you have any questions about CLEP testing feel free to Email me at any time. My address is alesult@maryno.net

There are many sources on the web which provide information about testing for credit. GOOD LUCK!!!
